Tartar removal – why it’s important and what to expect
What is dental calculus?
You’ve probably noticed hard deposits forming on your teeth, especially along the gumline. That’s dental calculus (tartar) – it develops when soft plaque deposits harden over time. Once formed, if soft plaque hasn’t been thoroughly removed from the teeth, calculus cannot be brushed away. At that point, you need a dentist who will remove it with special instruments in the clinic. If not removed regularly, calculus can cause gum inflammation and bleeding, bad breath, and even tooth loss.
That’s why professional removal at the dental office is the best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
What does professional teeth cleaning look like?
The procedure is simple and takes about 30 minutes to an hour. It includes:
-
a special ultrasonic device that gently removes calculus and rinses it with water,
-
the dentist then carefully cleans areas that a regular toothbrush cannot reach,
-
finally, polishing smooths the teeth and leaves that “clean and smooth” feeling,
-
if necessary, air-polishing is done – tiny particles under pressure remove stains from coffee, tea, or cigarettes, restoring the teeth’s natural shine and lighter color.
Most patients describe the sensation as just a slight tickling, but not painful. If the teeth are very sensitive, or the tooth necks exposed, the procedure may feel uncomfortable – in such cases, local anesthesia can be used.
Types of cleaning
-
Regular cleaning (prophylaxis) – for maintaining gum health and prevention.
-
Air-polishing – ideal if you want to remove stains and naturally whiten teeth discolored by drinks or smoking.
-
Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing/curettage) – performed below the gumline for patients with subgingival deposits, gum inflammation, or periodontitis.
How often should tartar be removed?
We usually recommend every 6 months. For some, once a year is enough, while others may need it more often – especially if they are prone to tartar buildup, have poor oral hygiene, gum issues, or are smokers.
Benefits of regular cleaning
✔ prevents cavities and gum disease
✔ refreshes breath
✔ preserves natural teeth in the long run
✔ restores shine and improves the appearance of the smile
✔ saves money long term by preventing bigger and costlier treatments
Are there any risks?
This is a completely safe procedure. After cleaning, teeth may feel slightly sensitive or gums a bit sore, but this lasts only a day or two and goes away on its own.
When should you see a dentist immediately?
In addition to regular checkups, visit your dentist if you notice:
-
bleeding or swollen gums,
-
persistent bad breath,
-
loose teeth,
-
pain or sensitivity.
The sooner you react, the simpler and faster the treatment will be.
Conclusion
Teeth cleaning is not just “cosmetic” – it’s an investment in the health of your teeth and gums. With regular treatments, you prevent serious problems, protect your smile, and feel confident knowing your smile will remain your signature in the long run.
