Root canal treatment - Short guide about endodontic procedure

Root Canal Treatment – Everything You Need to Know About Endodontic Therapy

Tooth pain – especially the kind that doesn’t go away – is often a sign that something serious is happening beneath the surface. When decay reaches deep into the tooth or trauma damages the dental pulp, one of the most effective ways to save the tooth is through endodontic therapy, commonly known as root canal treatment. Below, you’ll find everything you need to know – from what endodontics is, when it’s needed, and how the procedure works, to recovery time, whether it hurts, and how much it costs.

What Is Endodontic Therapy and Why Is It Performed?

Endodontic therapy is a dental procedure in which the infected or inflamed pulp is removed from inside the tooth. The canals are then cleaned, shaped, and filled with special materials to prevent further infection.

The pulp is located inside the tooth root and consists of nerves and blood vessels. When bacteria reach this area – usually due to deep decay or trauma – it can cause severe inflammation, pain, and swelling. If left untreated, the infection can spread to surrounding tissue and lead to tooth loss.

What Are the Symptoms That Indicate a Need for Root Canal Therapy?

Common signs that you may need endodontic treatment include:

  • Severe, throbbing toothache (especially at night)

  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold

  • Swelling of the gums or cheek

  • Darkened tooth color

  • Presence of a fistula (small opening leaking pus)

  • Discomfort when biting

In some cases, infection can be present without obvious symptoms, which highlights the importance of regular dental check-ups.

What Does the Procedure Look Like?

Root canal therapy typically involves the following steps:

  1. Diagnosis and X-ray – to assess the condition of the tooth and root canal system

  2. Anesthesia – local anesthesia ensures a pain-free procedure

  3. Rubber dam placement – isolation of the tooth being treated

  4. Access opening – the dentist creates a small opening to access the canals

  5. Pulp removal and cleaning – precise instruments and disinfectants are used

  6. Canal filling – cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material (gutta-percha)

  7. Sealing and restoration – the tooth is sealed with a filling, and if weakened, a crown is recommended

Most treatments can be completed in one or two visits, depending on complexity.

Does Root Canal Treatment Hurt?

Thanks to modern techniques and anesthesia, root canal therapy is now virtually painless and often relieves the intense pain patients were experiencing. Some mild sensitivity to pressure or biting may occur for a few days afterward – this is normal and temporary.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

Recovery is usually quick. Most patients return to their normal activities the same day. It’s recommended to avoid chewing on the treated side for a few days, until a permanent filling or crown is placed. If pain or swelling worsens after the procedure, contact your dentist for a check-up.

Is the Tooth Still "Alive" After Treatment?

Once the pulp is removed and canals filled, the tooth no longer has a nerve and is technically considered “dead.” However, a properly treated and restored tooth can last for many years – fully functional and aesthetically pleasing.

What Happens if the Tooth Isn't Treated in Time?

An untreated infection can lead to serious complications – from tooth loss to spreading infection that affects surrounding teeth, the jaw, or even other parts of the body. Chronic infections may develop silently, but eventually threaten overall oral health.

How Much Does Endodontic Therapy Cost?

The price depends on the number of canals, the condition of the tooth, and the complexity of the procedure. At our clinic, patients receive a detailed treatment plan and cost estimate before the therapy begins – with no hidden fees. Investing in saving your natural tooth is always a worthwhile long-term decision.
